Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
